Have I mentioned that in addition to being a bride-to-be with a full-time job, I’m also a grad student taking 3 classes this semester?
True story.
On the whole, I’m actually loving it – though the things I disliked about undergrad are still present in grad school (namely disorganized professors who don’t seem to care that they’re disorganized – If the syllabus says in week 3 there’ll be a quiz on chapter 3, having a quiz on chapter 6 makes no sense.)
I still maintain that half the value of the college degree you earn is a recognition of your ability to manuever the educational system and complete all necessary credits while juggling your real life and the different styles of many professors. And, if you’re in an educational program, throw in student teaching, field work, and at least three great big certification exams. (One of which I take in 3 weeks – gah!)
However, I remain excited by my coursework and convinced this is the right track.
This point was hammered home the other day by my geeking out over having to actually complete an assignment I had created for my fictional students.
My fictional classroom has just completed reading “Great Expectations,” (I am way too well-versed on Pip and friends right now) and so I have assigned them the task of choosing a secondary character from the novel and blogging from their point of view. This exercise is to show mastery of writing skills, creativity, and understanding of the novel.
So – as I had to model the assignment (ie, do it based on a similar work) and I am a huge book dork…
I chose Jane Eyre.
Since blogging as Jane herself was out of the question (Like Pip, she narrates her novel) I chose one of my favorite characters in all of literature – the haughty and aloof and lovely Blanche Ingram.
Granted, it’s still going to go through a revision phase (ie, assignment 8) but it’s a good start.
And I had WAY too much fun doing it.

Yeah, I’m going into the right field. For realz.
