Big Apple Bound!

December 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I’m New Jersey/New York bound today, and couldn’t be more excited.

Among the highlights I’m looking forward to are a huge New Years Eve party in Newark (Masquerade! Fire-eaters! Zebras? That’s what the press says!), seeing Ragtime the day before it closes on Broadway, setting foot inside The Strand (18 miles of books?!), and seeing friends – Jolene will be our hostess, and we’re trying hard to make plans with Whitney and Jason.

Who knows what else will happen? It’s NYC, people!

I heart New York.  (I’ve never been to New Jersey before, but I probably love it too!)

Broadway Bound! :)

December 28, 2009 · 1 Comment

If asked, I would have a hard time coming up with a musical I think is as soundly-structured and plainly perfect as Ragtime. So, the fact that my wonderful fiancee (a man who clearly pays attention) got us tickets to see the acclaimed new revival on Broadway when we’re in NYC next weekend excites me greatly.

Oh, the wonder….

I am over the moon. For realz.

(Update: Ragtime will be closing on Broadway on 1/3, the day after we see it. Sad news, but I’m glad I’ll get to see it nonetheless.)

Mr. and Mrs. Evans…

October 13, 2009 · 3 Comments

…or should I say Lieutenant and Mrs. Brendan and Aleisha Evans.. ?:)

Aleisha and Brendan got married this weekend in Traverse City, Michigan, and Eric and I road-tripped our way to Cherryland to attend the festivities.

It was a lovely ceremony and reception with lots of tears (I have never cried at a wedding before, but I cried twice!) and lots of joy. I also got a chance to be a bridesmaid for the first time ever, and learned several things I will surely put into play regarding my own upcoming wedding. Namely, the importance of the Best Man and Maid of Honor. Brian and Michelle need mad props for keeping things running smoothly, whether it was slipping away like a ninja to find the brides MIA camera, or keeping temper tantrum throwing ringbearers from crushing the train of a wedding dress. :) It’s good to have good people on your side, and Michelle and Brian were great.

It was also a weekend of reunions, as joining me in le bridal party was Ms. Jessica Robbins, who was my freshman year roomate at Central Michigan University. We haven’t seen each other in like five years, but it was quickly like no time had passed. She’s still as hilarious as ever.

And, though some key members of “The Clique” were absent, we still found time to catch up. Hooray for Chris making the trek from “Not Detroit” to attend.

A parting shot of the gorgeous couple – who are now crossing the country en route to their new home in Corpus Christi Texas before jaunting off to Rome for their honeymoon.

Congrats, kids~!

portaransassunrise

(Photo of a Port Aransas, Texas sunrise – 5:00am.)

Starting tomorrow, I am unplugging for five days of sand and surf in Port Aransas, Texas with Eric and his family, which excites me beyond belief.

Unlike Vegas, I’m not going to be taking my laptop, so I’ll really only be accessible via phone.  It’ll be a nice change – no pressure to respond to OMGEMERGENCY emails or to come up with clever facebook statuses for a few days.

(I also get to get away from my office for a few days, which is the best thing of all. It seems like stress levels just get higher and higher around here, overall. But really, based on conversations with friends, is ANYONE having a good time at work these days?)

I’ve managed to fit all my clothes into one backpack (as womens summer clothes fold surprisingly small) and am armed with a camera, tons of batteries, 2 books (“Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” by Barbara Kingsolver and “The Lost Symbol” by Dan Brown), my fully-charged ipod, some flip-flops, and no plans to do anything but relax, which is simply…. fabulous. I will be sitting in sand and reading and building sand castles and taking photos and that is that.

We’re staying at a most excellent and kitschy place called A Laughing Horse Lodge, and having perused the pics I am very much looking forward to taking in all the camp and colors – http://www.alaughinghorselodge.com

Tremendously, so so tremendously excited. :)

Great States

aransas

I am a week and a day away from a 5 day late summer vacation in Port Aransas, Texas, and this news delights me. Mostly because I will be the first to admit I am always desperately in need of a vacation. But also because of the fifty states in the US, I have never really been to Texas (other than a 20 minute layover at the Dallas/Ft. Worth airport en route to Mexico City, but really… I never left the airport and only managed to snag a Cinnabon while running from one gate to the next, so I’m not counting it.)

Including Texas, I will have seen two new states this year – and, since we’re doing a quick trip to New Jersey/New York for the holidays, that’ll equal three.

This got me thinking…

STATES I’VE VISITED

Arizona –

Dad and I drove around Arizona for a day on our way to Lake Mead/the Grand Canyon this past May.  It was really warm and sandy brown. Cows walked in the road. Epic views, though.

Illinois -

Duh. Live here.

Indiana -

I remain certain that in all the time I’ve lived in the Midwest and traveled places, at some point I’ve actually gotten out of the vehicle in Indiana. Where, I couldn’t tell you. Which I think says something about how memorable it was.

Florida -

Disneyland vacation in Kindergarden.

Kentucky -

En route to Tennessee. I liked it, I know. Wish I remembered what we did there.

Michigan -

Twenty four year resident, babe.

Minnesota -

Mall of America, thank you very much.

New York -

Mom and I spent a lovely few days in NYC a few years back. Walked around, saw shows, I auditioned for Hairspray. Pretty much a perfect time.

Nevada -

Of course it was Las Vegas. Seriously. And it was great.

South Carolina -

I have cousins there.

Tennessee -

Two consecutive summers held a week in Nashville for FanFair, a giant country music festival. I was fifteen and sixteen and I loved it.

Ohio -

It’s called Cedar Point, y’all.

Vermont -

Quick daytrip to check out a college I almost transferred to. The college was a bust, but Mom, Tom, and I had an awesome seafood meal before flying back. (It helps to have a stepdad who’s a pilot.)

Virginia -

Freshman year of college I did a program called “Alternative Spring Break,” where teams of students head to cities around the country and do service/environmental work. For a week, I stayed at a plantation in some forgotten Virginia State Park and planted flowers and built fences. Good times.

Washington D.C. -

During the aforementioned “Alternative Spring Break,” we had a day off and spent it in DC. Secret Service Guys in Starbucks? Heck yes.

Wisconsin -

In addition to vacationing at Wisconsin Dells with my Dad, Eric and I spent a weekend in Milwaukee.

STATES I REALLY WANT TO VISIT

Alaska –

I’m fascinated with the idea of an Alaskan Cruise.

(You have no idea how hard it was to not make a “I wanna see Russia!” joke.)

Hawaii –

Come on. Who doesn’t want to visit Hawaii?

Maine –

Blame Stephen King. I think it sounds grand.

Massachusetts –

I’ve been semi-obsessed with Boston ever since grade school. I think it’s a combination of Salem and my love for witches plus the idea of the Boston Tea Party. I love tea, you know. Also, I adore “Cheers.”

Louisiana –

Take New Orleans. Add in “True Blood.” Done.

Oregon/Washington –

My dream US trip is probably the Portland/Seattle combo. The whole area intrigues me.

*~~~~~~~*

So, fellow travelers… favorite states you’ve visited? Places stateside you want to go?

Vegas: Recap!

May 13, 2009 · 2 Comments

IMG_2418

Having just returned from 5 days, 6 nights in fabulous Las Vegas, I feel the need to write about the things I saw/did/learned in the past almost week.

Las Vegas rules.

Seriously.

It’s a nearly perfect city for what it is – a city based around excess and entertainment.

If you want to see a Cirque du Soliel show, there are 6 of them currently running on the Strip. Treasure Island has “Mystere,” which is apparently the classic, 15 year running, Vegas Cirque show. “O” (aka, the one with the pool) is at the Bellagio. “Zumanity” (ie, the naked/adult one) is at NYNY. “Love” (or, the Beatles one) is at The Mirage. “Ka” is playing somewhere else I can’t remember, and if you care (which no one seems to) Criss Angel’s Believe magic/illusion show is also a Cirque show, as the Cirque was kind enough to donate their mad skills to make Angel’s show as good as it can be, which according to people’s conversations still isn’t that good.

We saw “Mystere” and it was mavelous. We also saw the Vegas production of “Jersey Boys” which was even more marvelous. We debated seeing other shows – The Vegas “Phantom,” “Peepshow” (a new burlesque review starring Mel B from the Spice Girls) “Legends in Concert” (an impersonator show) and some others. [Carrot Top is all the rage, btw.] You can get 1/2 price and discount day of tickets to a multitude of shows at the Tix4Tonight booths, which are located like 7 places around the city.

IMG_2378

Madame Tussad’s Wax Museum was among my favorite things we saw. It’s silly, but I had far too much fun there.

If you don’t like sightseeing and casinos and shows, don’t go.

There really isn’t much else for you there (how long can you REALLY spend at Hoover Dam, you know?) If, like me, you like taking pictures of silly things and seeing a show a day and walking around with a fruity drink down the street, then it’s the place for you.

The weather is gorgeous – it was in the 90s each day we were there – and the people are friendly. People are happy there, since they’re largely all on vacation in a party city. If you can step around the hordes of buzzed college kids “woo”ing as they walk down the street, you’re golden.

Sunglasses are a must. You’ll go blind.

Also, shoes you can walk a distance in. You’ll thank me.

SO -

I dislike airports, despite my love for traveling. I’m a good flier, despite my hatred for descending. And yes, I realize what goes up must come down. It still doesn’t stop my stomach from churning when the plane loses altitude. I’m also grateful I was warned about shoe removal (flip flops rule!) and that I didn’t check any bags. I made it out there with 2 backpacks.  If I had to do it again, I’d have packed even lighter. I’d have packed 3 light dresses, flip flops, and one shorts/tank top combo for those Red Rock Canyon/Hoover Dam days. I’d have left my ipod at home (I never used it) and probably have left my laptop as well. Lessons learned.

My favorite Vegas Hotels -

IMG_2184

1. Paris. It’s so lovely and detailed. The 50 story fake Eiffel tower and the balloon replica are both amazing sights to see from the street, and the inside of the casino/hotel is just as pretty, with amazing chandeliers in the lobby and a decorating job that makes you feel as if you’re walking the streets of Paris at dusk no matter the time of day. I heart Paris.

IMG_1882

2. Treasure Island. We stayed at TI, and I enjoyed it immensely. It’s a gorgeous 4-star hotel that doesn’t take itself too seriously – and you know, having Cirque du Soliel IN your hotel doesn’t hurt either. The pool is great. There’s a restaurant called Kahunaville with flair bartenders. It’s a fun place.

IMG_2266

3. New York, New York. My lone regret of my vacation is that I didn’t ride the roller coaster at NYNY. Ah well, another visit sometime. It’s a cool, cool place – from the outside and from the inside. If I went back to Vegas, I would like to stay there and play more on the south end of the strip – and see “Zumanity,” which is their resident Cirque show.

4. The Venetian. Just spectacular in it’s prettiness.

5. The Bellagio. The fountains alone are enough to get it on this list, but the awesome lobby and conservatory also make it amazing. So much to see.

The Hotel I don’t like - Caesar’s Palace. It’s too big. And monstrous. And.. bland.. and hard to get around and nearly impossible to find your way out of. I didn’t care for it at all. I feel like the design goal of it was “Let’s make something really big! And let’s put it.. there!” Really and truly not a fan.

IMG_2081

It was also super nice to see things like Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, and Red Rock Canyon. Spectacular views, all of them. I also really loved Boulder City, which is quaint and colorful and the kind of place it would be nice to retire to.

IMG_1903

I had a wonderful time – I will likely go back at some point – but probably only for a 3 day weekend or something. (A week is about as long as I had in me for Vegas. It takes about 4-5 days to see everything, and after that you better like gambling. I like gambling – If I lived in Vegas I would SO have a gambling problem, seriously – but sometimes it feels like that’s the official sport of the town.)

Also, there’s way less Elvis than you think there’ll be.

Viva Las Vegas!

Live from Las Vegas – Part One.

May 8, 2009 · 3 Comments

welcomeairport

Vegas is really warm.

Thats the first impression you can’t help but have as you arrive. It’’s more than warm, it’s hot. It’s been over 92 degrees since we landed Wednesday evening around 5:00. Not that I’m complaining one bit.

That said, it’s a lovely vacation place – I can see why people adore it like they do. It’s colorful and flamboyant and loud and over the top and – as Bob so brilliantly said – “Disneyland for Adults.” You can walk down the street, hopping from casino to casino, with a drink in your hand.

Today (Thursday) was my first complete day here.

Quick recap:

WEDNESDAY – Arrival.

rockies

Met Dad at O’Hare. 4 hour flight full of fun conversation and amazing views of the Rocky Mountains, Grand Canyon, and Hoover Dam. Hooked up with trusty rental car and drove through town before heading to the hotel – Treasure Island.

IMG_1881

TI is brilliant. The most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in, an amazingly spacious bathroom, a fabulous view of the northern strip, a massive casino, Cirque Du Soliel, a fantastic pool, and a restaurant with flair bartenders known as Kahunaville. Positively a brilliant hotel experience. I  adore this place. We gambled at TI for a bit, then walked down the strip for a while and saw the volcano show at The Mirage.

IMG_1937

IMG_1903

IMG_1883

By the time we got back to the hotel, it was the Chicago/Michigan equivalent of 12 or 1am, so we were zonked.

THURSDAY -

Breakfast at Kahunaville (hee!), followed by a long drive into the desert to see Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon State Park/Lake Mead.

IMG_1981

Gorgeous road, but a really long drive. I took loads of pictures and we stopped in a teeeeny tiny little town called Meadview, Arizona to get gas at the ONE GAS STATION in ALL of the desert, apparently. It was like something out of a movie.

IMG_1989

There were cows walking down the road, and no people to be found.

IMG_1997

IMG_2016

We got to the actual Lake Mead, I took pics and stole rocks (ssh!) and then we turned around.

IMG_2030

We stopped for dinner at the Boulder Dam BrewPub in Boulder City, Nevada – which has been named “Best of Las Vegas” by several papers apparently. I had a brilliant Powerhouse Pale Ale and a delicious caesar salad.  Boulder City is adorable and colorful.  Then we headed back to Vegas, and continued our gambling expeditions.

WINNINGS SO FAR -

Wednesday: $50

Thursday: $120.00

CASINOS VISITED/GAMBLED IN -

(I’m not counting the ones we just stepped into.)

Treasure Island – which, as I’ve said, is lovely.

Harrah’s – gaudy, loud, and fun.

Casino Royale – total C-list casino on the strip. However, I got $50 in my first punch at Wheel of Fortune, AND found The Wizard of Oz game…so…

The Venetian – massive. gorgeous. rather impersonal as far as casinos go, and the game selection is lacking in comparison to TI.

SO – It’s going well. Tomorrow is Red Rock Canyon and yet another attempt to see the Sirens of TI show that takes place at the GIANT PIRATE SHIP in front of our hotel. No joke.

It’s a whole different world here. But it’s a marvelous vacation. I’m breathing, if you’re interested.

Love,

Jamie
