THE FIRST SNOWFALL

by James Russell Lowell

The snow had begun in the gloaming,
   And busily all the night
Had been heaping field and highway
With a silence deep and white.

Every pine and fir and hemlock
Wore ermine too dear for an earl,
And the poorest twig on the elm-tree
Was ridged inch deep with pearl.

From sheds new-roofed with Carrara
   Came Chanticleer's muffled crow,
The stiff rails were softened to swan's-down,
And still fluttered down the snow.

I stood and watched by the window
The noiseless work of the sky,
And the sudden flurries of snow-birds,
   Like brown leaves whirling by.

I thought of a mound in sweet Auburn
   Where a little headstone stood;
How the flakes were folding it gently,
As did robins the babes in the wood.

Up spoke our own little Mabel,
Saying, "Father, who makes it snow?"
And I told of the good All-father
Who cares for us here below.

Again I looked at the snow-fall,
And thought of the leaden sky
That arched o'er our first great sorrow,
When that mound was heaped so high.

I remembered the gradual patience
That fell from that cloud-like snow,
Flake by flake, healing and hiding
The scar of our deep-plunged woe.

And again to the child I whispered,
   "The snow that husheth all,
Darling, the merciful Father
   Alone can make it fall!"

Then, with eyes that saw not, I kissed her;
And she, kissing back, could not know
That my kiss was given to her sister,
   Folded close under deepening snow.

City in Limbo -

It hit 61 in some places yesterday in Chicago, but apparently it’s supposed to snow this weekend.
Poor wonderful Chicago – You and your citizens don’t know what to do, do you? Do I wear a fleece, or my winter coat? Will I at any point today need gloves? Gah! It’s enough to make people go crazy.

But at least it’s getting pretty.

As I was walking 2 miles at lunch yesterday in the 50+ degree sunshine, I was reminded of how much I bitched last year about how hot the summer was. I promise to remember how angrycold this winter was ANY time I feel like whining about heat this year.
Cross my heart.

You could say that I had spring fever….

It’s official.
I want, no…scratch that. I NEED summer to come. Now. I need to be able to cast off my winter layers and boots in favor of flip flops and flirty dresses. I want to be able to saunter down Broadway and stop in little stores and get rainbow colored drinks at outdoor cafes in fabulous shoes. I want to be able to do random things you can’t do in the winter in Chicago – like wander over to the lake and sit by the shore and watch people walking their happy, contented dogs.
This February in Chicago has gone on record as being something like the February with the least sunshine ever, or something ridiculous like that. And it’s insane. The sun came out the other day for a few minutes while Brent and I were outside, and we went crazy. I understand why plants position themselves toward the sun.
Summer, come quick! I’m losing my mind here.
To ward off the winter blues/seasonal depression brought on by living in Chicarctic (which I’m now calling it)… I’m going to buy shoes that are useless in any other season but summer.
So there.

we’re having a heatwave!

It hit 60 degrees in Chicago today.

It’s January.

I do not understand this. I don’t mind it, but I don’t understand it.

Al Gore is TOTALLY right, methinks.

Sometimes, nature is awesome and I can’t NOT take out the camera.
Happy Autumn. (It’s about time.)

Hello, Gorgeous

So, two days ago, it became fall. As in, it was nice one day and the next day it was actually – dare I say? – chilly in the morning. As I’m really over this disgustingly hot summer Chicago’s been having anyway, and I’m a huge fan of autumn, this thrills me.

It’s my favorite time of the year –

Halloween is approaching….

Pumpkin Spice is back at Starbucks….

Pretty soon it’ll be time for trips home and reunions with long-lost people you only see on holidays….

I remember fall at MSU, when my favorite part of the day was stopping for coffee and then walking to my Lit classes as all the leaves changed to orange and brown and you could smell the change in the air…

I’m excited to rock sweaters and jeans again, instead of having to figure out how to look stylish yet be comfortable on 90+ degree days when even having fabric next to your skin makes you feel sticky and gross….

Yay! It’s scarf season…

Oh autumn, you gorgeous gorgeous thing. Welcome back.

hey ho, the wind and the rain..

(TOTALLY overdramatic picture. Stolen from someplace online.)

I survived a tornado today. Yeah, that was fun.
